ON WEDNESDAY MORNING, Édouard turned up with the relief guard and was telling Ricqui about Jamal in the kitchen.

‘Oh mon Dieu. Tu ne peux pas imaginer. Ce qu’il m’a fait. Copine! Aïe, il est puissant au lit. Ces mecs m’a arraché par mes mains et mes pieds. Je ne pouvais même pas bouger. Il jouait avec mon corps pendant trois heures. Ces doigts sont magies, chaque fois qu’il me frôla tout mon corps trembla. Je criais tous le temps. Le bruit a dérangé toute la maison. Pendant tous ce temps, a chaque instant que je fus prêt a jouir, il s’arrêta. Il m’obligeait de frémir au point de jouer pendant trois heures ma fille. Et après, comme il m’a donné! Tu as dû bien aimer toi-même.’

‘Ouawowowowow! Copine. Dis moi, le pain?’ Ricqui asked, ‘il a au moins quelque chose dans le pantalon?’

Kash came into the kitchen with Everton ‘Hey guys. Good morning, quit jabberin’ in French will ya for an instant. Is there some coffee, Ed? Ma head’s splittin’, welcome home, are ya okay? That was some ordeal ya had.’

‘You have no idea,’ Édouard replied, ‘What I saw and heard after you and Everton left. Oliver is a dangerous man. Il a torturé un joli petit garçon de l’autre gang, Ricqui.’

‘Oui, Everton me l’a dit,’ Ricqui responded, ‘et tu assistais?’

‘Hey, guys, English please.’ Kash demanded.

‘I am sorry, Kash,’ Édouard said, ‘I was just telling Ricqui what happened yesterday. It was mostly about Jamal.’

‘We heard the noise ya were makin’.’ Kash grinned. ‘Ya don’ need ta elaborate. I’m more concerned about that boy.’

‘I had just got to that part when you came in,’ Édouard explained, ‘the poor little boy. At least he spoke English, so I was not needed. Jamal sent me out when it got nasty and gave me his iPod to listen to so I could not hear what was going on.’

‘That’s somethin’ at least, I wouldn’a’ wanted ya ta witness that. Dare I ask how it went with Jamal, ya rascal? If the other night, was just fer starters I can’t hardly imagine what ya got up ta?’

Édouard went bright scarlet and fidgeted slightly. ‘Perhaps I should just say he’s left a lasting impression on me.’

‘Hold, on guys, it’s quarter past,’ Everton interrupted them. ‘Turn your phones on.’ They waited tensely. A minute passed, then all their phones beeped at once. It was a text from James:

Will call at your place at noon today. Important news. James. Don’t forget about next week.

‘I wonder what that’s about?’ Everton asked.

‘Dunno,’ Kash answered. ‘But that bit about next week means we gotta change our SIMs. Put in next Wednesday’s one.’

‘Do we really have to do this?’ Ricqui grumbled as he fiddled with his phone. ‘It is so irritating. Not to mention costly. These SIMs aren’t exactly free.’

‘Yes it is,’ Kash insisted. We’ve got MI6 after us. An’ now Abdi’s outa the picture, they’ll be watchin’ our phones. Olly was very precise about that.’

‘Don’t forget we are looking for about a hundred million pounds worth of diamonds,’ Everton reminded him.
